Our aim is to work with our young people, so that we build safe, strong relationships that combine trust, affection and comfort along with clear behavioural expectations, boundaries and routines. We will ensure that all the key developmental areas of health, education, emotional and personal development, family and social relationships, identity, self-care and social presentation are addressed in the planning and development for each young person.
It is our understanding that children and young people who have experienced early life trauma or neglect have difficulty in developing effective attachments and are unable to build effective relationships, due to their ‘protective inner working model’. We believe their ability to form strong and lasting relationships with others is critical for their future wellbeing. It is for this reason that Care Acre is in the process of developing our training programme that focuses on putting attachment and trauma theory into practice. Training is facilitated for staff using the principles of Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy (PACE) with the aim of providing attachment security through consistent and attuned approaches.
A comprehensive assessment and review process for every young person when they arrive at the home is undertaken, to ensure they have the right care put in place centred on their needs and how we can help them grow from within as a young person in our care. The reviews will help the young person and key worker develop plans which will meet their needs and also look at the areas they need more support.
At Care Acre, we believe it is essential to undertake an assessment at referral, placement start and at strategic points during the placement. The initial assessment will incorporate key domains of the young person’s function and development needs including educational, emotional/behavioural, social and learning skills.
The assessment period’s findings will inform the placement plan, placement goals and educational/training/employment needs and crucially, will begin to define parameters for outcomes. We are always going to be working towards positive outcomes for all parties involved in the home; when a young person is struggling to adjust to the new environment this will be monitored and the team will help them adjust to the new home.
Care Acre will work collaboratively with local CAMHS services and other specialist teams to help those young people who are struggling with mental health issues. This will be written into the Care/Placement plans for them and they will have full encouragement from staff to gain the help needed to gain recovery for their mental health. We will be promoting at all times a range of treatment options for them which they have the right to access while they are with us.
We staff are trained and work closely with our in-house clinical psychologist, Dr Natalie who provides clinical input and oversight into our homes. Each young person is given the opportunity to access this service. Dr Natalie provides in- house training to staff where needed with regard to many different aspects of mental health such as depression, self-harm, eating disorders etc.
We can provide a range of individual psychological therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psycho-analytic Therapy, Person-centered, Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Narrative Therapy. Any use of therapy is determined by the outcome of a clinical assessment for the young person. The assessment will then guide the type, level and duration of any therapy or therapeutic input.
We have a very clear vision for the children and young people we care for. Using long established systems of care and support along with a continuing skills development programme for our entire team, our target for each and every young person is to enrich their lives with new life skills, and provide a renewed sense of wellbeing, to achieve a good level of education or working experiences and to improve their prospects for the future. We aim to make a real difference to young lives.
Our staff undergo continuous training and development to ensure the highest quality care. This includes:
In-house and external training tailored to specific needs.
Clinical oversight to support both staff and young people providing therapies with Berri Assessment Tool.
All staff are trained in and apply key models including the Attachment, Regulation and Competency(ARC) framework, PACE and Trauma-Informed Care.
Multiagency involved programmes to meet the evolving needs of the children we support.
